Shuttleworth, Inc., to celebrate its 45th anniversary
Huntington, IN – April 30, 2007 – Shuttleworth, Inc., to celebrate its 45th anniversary as a leading global conveyor automation and material handling machinery manufacturer on May 21, 2007. Since 1962, the company has delivered over 18,000 product handling conveyor systems, worldwide.
Jim Shuttleworth, founder, worked in the family’s tomato farm/cannery near Warren. Jim and his father developed a can un-scrambler and subsequently started production of the machines in 1952. Upon the death of his father, Jim purchased the machinery production side of the business.
Named the Shuttleworth Machinery Corporation, the company moved to Huntington in 1962. With only three employees from the cannery, SMC began manufacturing can un-scramblers and later; a high-speed, hydraulic, case packer, called the Shuttleworth Futurematic. By 1965, the company was licensing the case packers not only in the U.S., but also in Holland, England and Australia.
As a solution to feeding products gently into the case packer, the first “Slip-Torque” conveyor was invented and patented. Before long, SMC was building and shipping more conveyor than other machinery products.
In 1969, Shuttleworth moved into a new facility at the present location, 10 Commercial Road, Huntington, Indiana. In 1974, the company was renamed as Shuttleworth, Inc. and a joint venture was opened in Japan. A manufacturing facility was opened in Oudenaarde, Belgium in 1979. The Huntington operation grew and prospered and an expansion was added to the building in 1980.
The European manufacturing operation was relocated to Athy, Ireland with sales and service remaining in Belgium in 1981. The Huntington location completed a second expansion in 1984. Japan’s operation also experienced growth and moved into a new and larger facility in Yokahama in 1986. The company continued to prosper through the 90’s with increased sales in the markets served.
Shuttleworth “Easy-Clean” conveyor for the food and healthcare market was introduced in 2002. The following year saw the development of anti-microbial plastics for direct food contact applications. Shuttleworth’s innovative “star” roller was also developed for the paper handling industry in 2003.
In 2003, Carol Shuttleworth assumed leadership of the company after Jim’s unexpected death. As CEO and President, Carol immediately focused the company’s direction on key markets in the healthcare, food and paper industries. Shuttleworth engineering continues to provide customers the best solutions for manufacturing challenges and maintains position as the industry leader in advanced conveying and product handling technology. Recognizing the growth potential in Eastern Europe, the Ireland operation was relocated to Sint Martens Latem, Belgium in 2004. The company is now better positioned to serve central and eastern Europe as well as western European markets.
Shuttleworth, Inc. has been a member of the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) since 1967. The company is certified ISO 9001:2000. In 2006, Shuttleworth received national certification as a Women’s Business Enterprise by the Women’s Business Enterprise Council (WBENC).
