Distributing Lanes of Oatmeal for Case Packing - System Spotlight

In this system spotlight, we use a pivoting laner to divert cartons of oatmeal from a single lane to multiple lanes. Each lane is balanced and evenly accumulates to properly feed the down stream case packer.

Welcome to System Spotlight, giving you an in-depth look at Shuttleworth’s more advanced product handling systems and conveyor applications. In this video, we will showcase a solution for one of our customers that wanted to accumulate cartons of oatmeal in three lanes between carton sealing and case packing.

Shuttleworth manufactures space-efficient ninety-degree turns that will maintain the orientation of the cartons and allow the system configuration to fit into a tight space. This system uses Shuttleworth’s chain-driven design for the Slip-Torque low-line pressure conveyor and fractional horsepower motors, making it incredibly energy efficient while gently handling the cartons and eliminating product damage.

A three-lane diverter was designed by the Shuttleworth engineering team to distribute the left two lanes to a case packer and the right lane to a hand pack station. The diverter utilizes a brake built into the arm to hold back cartons to ensure a smooth transfer to the proper lane. Multi-lane conveying and accumulation are easily accomplished with overhead mounted guide rails.

Shuttleworth’s Slip-Torque design causes the rollers underneath the cartons to stop during accumulation. Because conventional mat top or belt conveyors continue to move while accumulating product, Shuttleworth’s Slip-Torque design greatly reduces or eliminates scuffing on the underside of the product. When accumulating in multiple lanes, only the rollers in the lane that is backed up stop under the product, allowing the cartons in the other lanes to continue down the line.

The left two lanes continue around a 90-degree turn to a case packer while the right lane continues forward to a hand pack station. For more information on Shuttleworth capabilities and solutions, please visit our website at Shuttleworth.com.
